uni life- the low down

hi y'all! :) this is gonna be a long one. it's safe to say that i've finally nestled right in to life here so i'm just gonna give the low down on university- the good, the bad and all the things in between. so brace yourself, for the insights into what they never tell you on uni brochures. ;)

the first 4 weeks- my thoughts in brief:

1) enrollment is the one helluva b***. trust me, seeing a whole bunch of papers and deadlines along with a to-do list, is not what i call a good thing after 6 months of intellectual atrophy. motor retardation is to be expected. it gets a bit too much when you realize that you're now in the big sea and you've gotta keep your eye out on your own. but hey, i made it thru unscathed. when you're frazzled, just take a look around, everyone else is pretty much in the shitfield like you are.
2) ahhh, now the morning drives to uni .. an absolute delight. :) imagine skirting along the most magnificent river with a clear overhead expanse of the skies. i swear, people in perth are much better people. there's something about this place, that makes you slow down and relax. smiles and graciousness definitely come more easily.
3) coming from the jailhouse of a jc, the kick i get out of being on a first-name basis with my tutors is fantastic. i do believe, i actually feel taller walking around in uni. ;)
4) i love the freedom in uni. the freedom to do what i like without judgement. people dress weirdly, wackily and no one bats an eyelid. everyone accepts and doesn't question your identity. people pretty much walk around like very well-mannered adults. this is something i feel, singapore lacks. there's always all that bitching stereotyping and whatevers. seriously, is there nothing better to do? people go about on their own and they go about uni with a sense of self-fulfilment. i myself, am going for my classes out of interest and maturity (i hope so). i think i'm growing up.
5) one thing that really stood out to me, was the presence of so many mature students. in my visual arts unit, there are heaps of older people. from the middle-aged to the greying-haired. even in medicine, matt's year 1 batch has got middle-aged people. i like that education here is about upgrading oneself and not just a stepping stone for a money-churning career.
6) oh and ilectures! :) haha. they're recorded lectures and i use them because i have a timetable clash and i can't go to my english lectures. the flexibilty of uni haha. i even changed units. i attended one political science tut and omg, the amt of reading is beyond obscene. i can't do that! instead i chose macroecons just cus its the easy way out. and hey, one less essay unit!
7) the debates in tuts! you know, being the complete institutional renegade i was, i say with disbelief that, uni makes me wanna learn so much more. my lectures are soo passionate, i've never seen anyone go on about something so wildly and with such conviction. my favourite lectures are visual arts ones, oooh the 60s- such a tumultuous period, such interrogating art! my tut for the knowledge option for philosophy is another really, not-to-be-missed session. people were jst throwing out ideas and it was back forth back forth. oh and just for laughs, the entire tut ended up calling me mickey.. yeah the first tut i was really wonky and tired and i dont know why but i said my name was mickey ..
8) i really abhor uni toilets. -sticks tongue down throat- i strictly stick to the arts library's toilet but even then it stinks like a skunk smeared in shit. but hey toilets are interesting .. take a seat on the toiletbowl and stare into fiery arguments about 'queer' girls (queer people refer to lesbians/gays etc. we have a queer club) and check out the most conducive areas in uni to bonk, with pictorial illustrations of the best positions to boot! :P
9) food, food, food. food here is awesome. as for uni food .. it's alright. it's a good thing for me becus australian girls are inclined to vegetarianism so everywhere you get vegetarian food. and uni has a flight centre, hair salon/waxing/massage etc beauty parlor, computer shop and alot more. and random ppl come into uni to sell things all the time. and if u like hot dogs, they always give away free hotdogs in buns, and condoms and whatever stuffs.
10) i believe the campus is always buzzing with activities. from balls, social justice week, queer week to i don't even know. matt tells me about prosh all the time. its some event whereby the uni producs an entirely hilarious satirical pseudo newspaper and everyone dresses in the craziest outfit and head to the city to sell the papers. and u see heaps of flyers advertising the strangest things. there was a fashion show one, i even saw some dragon boat tug of war thing and at the tavern there are always bands or djs showcasing their stuff. and hey! i heard on the radio that a major WA schools surfing comp is coming up soon! oh and you get clubs like the S*A*B*A*S* (sausage and bun appreciation club) and yeah .. i dont know man. on their club website the have pictures of testicles and a stripper fully naked and shizz. :P interested parties may google it out.
11) ... yeahh ill add more laters. i realize i need to get down to an ilecture before it's too late! sorry! check back another time folks :)
